knit/lab/Gulf of Mexico 2026

“The nets were overflowing

  In the Gulf of Mexico”

This is a follow-on version of my 2025 Gulf of Mexico scarf

inspired by “Refuge of the Roads” by Joni Mitchell.

This version has an i-cord edging which begins neatly with a multiple increase from a single loop and finishes neatly with a multiple decrease.

The pattern is fully written out with no charts.

Techniques include the backwards loop CO, multiple increases, and a centered double decrease.

Knit on 5mm/US8 needles with approximately 60g/280yds/260m of leftover lengths of Schoppel Wolle Zauberball Crazy; colorways include Change of Scenery, Dark Roses, Cool Botanical Garden and Late Autumn.

The scarf is worked with two strands held together. If you are working with one strand of a heavier yarn, allow approximately 140yds/130m.

Dimensions: approximately 4ins/10.5cm wide by 43.5ins/110cm

Gauge: approximately 18sts (measured on the diagonal)

and 28 rows (measured along the spine) = 4ins/10cm

The pdf contains the written pattern with accompanying notes and images, a phototutorial on splicing and a short video tutorial on the backwards loop CO.
