knit/lab/bloomsbury swirl
Bloomsbury Swirl is a flamboyant crescent featuring bands of a floral intarsia pattern in three different colorways. Short rows add a touch of eccentricity.
Knit on 3.5mm/US4 needles with approximately 212g/900m/975yds of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift yarn
Dimensions: approximately 175cm/70in across by 68cm/27in deep at center back
Gauge: approximately 20 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm/4ins in stocking stitch
The intarsia colorwork is charted, and the rest of the pattern (short rows, etc.) is in written form.
Colors used in the sample shawl include two balls each of Nighthawk 1020, Prussian Blue 726, and Plum 585, one each of Mirage 722, Rust 578, Splash 757, Dog Rose 268, and Flame 271, 38 x 3m/3.3yd lengths in many colors for the intarsia flower motifs, and 70 x 1.5m/60in lengths for the half flower motifs.
There will be some left over of the specified colors (except possibly Mirage and Splash) some of which can be used for flower motifs. Of course, you don’t have to use these colors or color distribution! For example sections worked in plain color can be worked in two or more different colors, in stripes or gradations. I used Mirage throughout as a transition between the different parts of the shawl, but a variety of colors can be used to frame different elements.
The chart as worked for the third time with MC Plum requires more than one ball of MC, however you can combine one ball of Plum with similar colors to create shading.
The intarsia colorwork is charted only, and the rest of the pattern is in written form only. The pdf contains one chart, notes & instructions, and a phototutorial on splicing.
