Shetland Shadows is a textured interpretation of Shetland Ruffles, in which the colored stripes are replaced by shadows and highlights. The curved ridges and shadows are created by alternating bands of stocking stitch with bands of reverse stocking stitch while working a lace pattern. Unlike Shetland Ruffles, which requires alternating colors or a self-striping yarn to show the curves created by the lace stitches, this pattern can be worked in a plain color, a variegated yarn, or a gradation. If you’d like to work the pattern in a more colorful yarn like Crazy Zauberball, the shadows will add extra tonal variation.
