knit/lab/patchwork crescent

A cosy colorful crafty vintage homemade handmade thrifty crescent knit on 3.5mm/US4 and 4mm/US6 needles with approximately 200g/920yds/840m of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift yarn in lots of colors.

The pattern provides an intarsia framework, which can be interpreted as you please, taking inspiration from paintings and various textile traditions, including quilting and Japanese Boro patchwork - see the Pinterest mood board.

The key to the project is a rich harmonious color palette; I worked with a selection of denim blues and grays, adding some rusts, reds and brown, some greens and a tiny bit of golden yellow as highlights.

The pattern can be knit using the simple intarsia framework, or you can change the position or width of patches, amalgamate parts of patches, introduce stranded motifs that spread across different patches, and add knit/purl textures, and simple lace motifs, adding as much extra decoration as you want!

Dimensions: approx. 180cm/71in across by 65cm/25.5in deep at center back

Gauge: approximately 22 stitches and 28 rows = 10cm/4in in stocking stitch

This pattern was originally published in five instalments as a mystery knit-along pattern in April & May 2018. There is a thread for the KAL on Ravelry.

The pdf includes charts and instructions, notes on intarsia and stranding and a phototutorial on splicing yarn ends.
