Camino Bubbles has a large circular motif in drop stitch mesh, perfect for wildly variegated & self striping yarns, and easily customizable in width & length.
The pdf includes two versions of the pattern: the main version with large bubbles (pictured against the sky, above and right) and another version with smaller bubbles (pictured on a red background, below). There are full written instructions as well as charts for both versions of the pattern. In addition, the pdf now includes “in the round” versions - see 2024 Update below.
The large bubbles sample was knit on 3.5mm/US4 needles with 40g/160m/180yds of Lang Jawoll Magic Dégradé Superwash 75% new wool, 25% nylon, shade 59.
Dimensions: approximately 20in/50cm wide x 18in/45cm in length.
Allow 2 balls of yarn for a full sized project.
Each repeat of the circle motif adds approximately 6.5in/16cm to the length.
The final pattern differs slightly from the sample shown: narrow panels of 1x1 ribbing have been added to make the long side edges more substantial.
The smaller bubbles project was knit on 3.5mm/US4 needles with one skein, 400m/437yds Hedgehog Fibres Sock yarn Pod colorway, and five Sock Minis, each 80m/87yds: Guppy, Oracle, Sorry Not Sorry, Anime, and Sin.
I used approximately 180g/720m/790yds, so there are some leftovers.
Gauge: approximately 18 stitches and 25 rows = 4ins/10cm in stocking stitch
Finished dimensions: approximately 160cm/62ins by 53cm/21ins
2024 Update: The English pattern pdf has been updated to include “in the round” versions of the large and smaller bubbles. These new versions can be used for anything that you’d like to knit in the round. They start and finish with half bubbles and have a continuous pattern of full bubbles for the rest of the knitting as the beginning and end of the rounds are hidden in the drop stitch pattern.
I have not made a full project, but I have made a swatch with the large bubbles in the round pattern.
If you’re considering making a garment in the round, I recommend starting with a generous swatch to establish gauge, yarn quantities, etc.
English, French, German and Swedish versions of the pdf are available. With thanks to Christine Chochoy for the French translation, to Iris Müller for the German translation and to Karolina Pihl for the Swedish one.
Camino Bubbles is also available as part of the knit/lab Originals volume 1 eBook.
