knit/lab/pomegranate patchwork

Curvy intarsia inspired by stylized pomegranates, symbols of fertility, fruitfulness and abundance in Mediterranean textiles.

The rounded shapes are created by increasing and decreasing within a chevron pattern.

The chevrons are emphasized by frequent color changes. I organized my colors in related groups and worked with relatively short lengths of yarn, splicing in a new length when necessary. A similar effect can be achieved using self-striping yarns, or leftovers of different types of yarn. My color palette is a bit over the top - the pattern can also be worked in more muted or limited shades, and a number of alternative color palette ideas are included in the pdf for inspiration.

Knit on 4.5mm/US7 needles using approximately 150g/690yds/630m of Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift and various similar yarns in a variety of colors.

Dimensions: approximately 18ins/46cm wide by 49ins/124cm

Gauge: approximately 19.5 stitches and 21 rows = 4ins/10cm in pattern

The pdf contains a chart and full written pattern, notes and instructions, photos, lots of suggestions for alternative colorways and a phototutorial on splicing. The chart has an unusual layout as it is divided into repeating sections which are sometimes worked once and sometimes twice. If it seems a bit daunting at first, you will find the written instructions helpful!
