knit/lab/iceland

Inspired by a trip to Iceland in June 2009. The Icelandic laceweight yarn was purchased at Alafoss. I started knitting in Seyðisfjörður, ripped it out and started again in Akureyri.

As usual I changed my mind about minor details as I went along - the flat photo below is the most accurate representation of the final design.

The shawl starts and ends with a single stitch and is worked in one piece.

The charting is not too complex - but you need to jump between charts as the border triangles are charted separately.

Knit on US6/4mm needles using 4 balls of Ístex Loðband Einband Icelandic laceweight yarn col 0008 grey,

approx. 985yds/900m. Finished dimensions after blocking: 27in/68cm x 88in/224cm

The pdf includes charts and instructions for the pattern as pictured here, and charts and instructions for a rectangular version with a zigzag lace border and plain edges.

English and French versions of the pdf are available. With thanks to Christine Chochoy for the French translation and for making some Icelandic yarn kits available here.
